One of the biggest names in cinema, screenwriter and director David Lynch, has passed away at the age of 78. Family members announced the sad news after Lynch himself revealed in August 2024 that he was suffering from emphysema, a chronic lung disease caused by smoking.

Born in Missoula, in 1946, Lynch spent most of his childhood in Idaho.

Lynch was married four times and had a long-term relationship with his Blue Velvet co-star, Isabella Rossellini.

Lynch began a new era in American cinema: from his early days as an art student making experimental short films, to his first cult success, the surrealist Eraserhead, and to a string of award-winning films, including Blue Velvet, Wild at Heart, and Mulholland Drive, as well as the seminal television show Twin Peaks.

He received three Oscar nominations for Best Director (for Blue Velvet, The Elephant Man, and Mulholland Drive) and was awarded an honorary Oscar for lifetime achievement in 2019; he won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival for Wild at Heart in 1990.

But more than anything, the director will be remembered for his unconventional style that is now known as "Lynchian."
