Srpska Lista , the largest party of Kosovo Serbs, announced on Sunday that it will not take part in a vote on the dismissal of the Albanian mayors of four Serb-majority municipalities in northern Kosovo, which is scheduled for April 21.
"The position of Lista Srpska is not to participate in the referendum called by Albin Kurti [Kosovo's prime minister] because he did everything to fail," Srpska Lista chairman Zlatan Elek said Sunday at a news conference in Northern Mitrovica.
He said that "unrealistic procedures" were in place for the April 21 vote and that the voter rolls "do not reflect the real situation on the ground" and that the number of Albanians on the voter rolls "has increased."
"In two months in all municipalities the number of voters has disproportionately increased by 433 percent," the Srpska Lista chairman said.
Elek gave no evidence of his claims of a rise in the voter roll rate.
Kosovo's Central Election Commission decided to hold the vote on 21st, after verifying the signatures of citizens on petitions for the dismissal of the mayors of serb-majority municipalities in northern Kosovo – Mitrovica, Leposavic, Zvecan and Zubin Potok.
The signatures were collected in mid-January in accordance with an administrative instruction issued by the Government of Kosovo, in order to pave the way for the announcement of early elections in the northern municipalities, because the local Serb population has not accepted Albanian mayors.
According to the instruction, adopted last September, for this vote to be successful, 50 percent, plus a vote of citizens with the right to vote.
After that, the results are sent to The President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, who has a legal deadline of 30 to 45 days to announce the holding of early elections.
Albanian mayors were elected in April 2023 in elections boycotted by Serbs in dissatisfaction with the policies of the Kosovo government.
The start of their task prompted tensions in late May last year, which culminated in Zvecan, after Serbian protesters clashed with members of NATO's peacekeeping mission in Kosovo, KFOR.
The international community had called for the reduction of tensions and the announcement of new elections in four municipalities in northern Kosovo.
The petition was also signed by representatives of Lista Srpska, the party that boycotted the April 2023 elections.
The party initiated the removal of Serbs from Kosovo institutions in November 2022 and then called for a boycott of last April's elections.
But in mid-October 2023, she said she was ready to take part in the elections in the municipalities in the north without any conditions for participating in the elections, as she had done before. /Rel
