Germany is increasingly openly confronting a covert Russian war. But Berlin and other European capitals are still hesitant to say what is really going on: Moscow is not just waging war against Ukraine, but also against Europe.
Germany is increasingly being targeted by Russian intelligence services. The latest case: According to a media report, German security authorities have found a secret weapons cache near Berlin. The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, as the domestic secret service is called in Germany, assumes that the cache was set up on the orders of Russian intelligence services, the German media Norddeutscher Rundfunk, Westdeutscher Rundfunk and "Süddeutsche Zeitung" reported on Friday. Two small firearms were stored in the cache, in a forest in the state of Brandenburg. According to the report, the German Federal Prosecutor's Office is already conducting an investigation on suspicion of preparation of a serious act of violence that endangers the state.
A suspect was arrested some time ago in Romania. According to the report, he may have set up the weapons depot. The media reports that officials had received a tip-off about the hideout and had found it at the end of last summer. German security authorities are now convinced that the weapons were hidden for agents who, on Russia's orders, were to carry out political assassinations. According to German media, the director of Germany's domestic secret service, Sinan Selen, has warned for months that Russian secret services have hardened their line and are also planning assassinations in Germany.
This is not the only case. This week, a court in Stuttgart sentenced a Ukrainian to one year and three months in prison for acting as an agent for Russia. The Ukrainian, who lives in Switzerland, was accused of planning acts of sabotage and assassinations in Germany. On the orders of the Russian secret service, he had investigated transport routes for package bombs. Two other people were acquitted of the charges. All three were arrested in May last year in Germany and Switzerland.
Criminals like the convicted Ukrainian are called “Wegwerfagenten” in the German media: disposable agents who are then thrown away. This notion, according to the Swiss newspaper “Tages-Anzeiger”, began to be used from 2022. “Since the attack on Ukraine, the Russian secret services have intensified their covert activities in Europe, developing completely new methods in the process. For simple forms of espionage, sabotage, vandalism, arson, disinformation or propaganda, they are increasingly using young people who live in the area. Recruitment is carried out everywhere and via social networks.”
Policia zbuloi se droni ishte i pajisur me lëndë shpërthyese ushtarake.
(...) Pushteti i Putinit bazohet te frika e Perëndimit.
German Minister Dobrindt said that in Leipzig it was about a “hybrid scenario”. The “NZZ” commentator criticized the inflationary use of the word “hybrid” in describing Russian attacks in Europe. “Every time something happens, it is now called ‘hybrid’. It sounds professional and means nothing. Ever since the term ‘hybrid warfare’ surfaced after the turn of the millennium, it has done more harm than good. If Moscow spreads fake news on the Internet, it is hybrid warfare. If Moscow sends its spies, it is hybrid. This inflation turns war into a commonplace issue and trivializes it. If everything is hybrid, in the end nothing is war anymore.”
In fact, what Moscow is doing is war. Not just against Ukraine. But also against Europe.
