The story that moved the world to tears: Israel admits for the first time the
Hind Rajab

The Israeli military has confirmed that its soldiers opened fire on the vehicle carrying 5-year-old Palestinian Hind Rajab and six members of her family in an incident that occurred in January 2024 in Gaza City. The confirmation comes about two and a half years after the event, which sparked widespread international outrage.

The case will now be subject to a criminal investigation by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), following the conclusions of a special mechanism set up to review such incidents.

Hind survived initially and called for help

Hind Rajab initially survived the attack on her vehicle, in which several of her family members were killed. Trapped inside the car, the 5-year-old managed to communicate for hours with the Palestine Red Crescent, asking for help.

An ambulance was sent to rescue him, in an operation reportedly coordinated with the Israeli military. However, the ambulance was hit and two medical workers were killed.

Communication with Hind was cut off after more shots were fired. A later investigation found that 335 bullets had been fired at the family's vehicle.

The little girl's body was found 12 days later, along with the bodies of her family members.

IDF changes initial version

According to the latest announcement from the Israeli army, the investigative mechanism concluded that soldiers had fired at the vehicle as it approached IDF forces.

The military claims that the car was traveling in the opposite direction to the evacuation route announced to residents in the area. However, it said that suspected shortcomings in the coordination of the ambulance's movement led to the decision to open a criminal investigation by the Criminal Investigation Department of the Military Police.

This development contradicts initial statements by the IDF, which had said that none of its soldiers were in the area at the time Hind was killed. This version has been called into question by subsequent data and investigations.

Hind Rajab's death became a symbol of the war in Gaza

Hind Rajab's death caused a huge international outcry, especially after the audio recording of her phone call to Red Crescent workers was released, in which she asked for help while trapped in a vehicle.

Her story was later turned into a film, "The Voice of Hind Rajab", which received international attention and was nominated for an Oscar.

IDF opens investigations into other cases

In addition to the case of Hind Rajab and her family, the IDF announced that it will also criminally investigate the deaths of 15 Palestinians in March 2025, among them medical personnel and a UN employee, near Rafah in southern Gaza.

Meanwhile, in other cases the military said it had found no basis for criminal investigations. These included the deaths of seven World Central Kitchen workers in Deir al-Balah in April 2024, as well as the deaths of four Doctors Without Borders workers in two separate incidents.

The Israeli military's internal investigations have been followed with international attention, as the IDF faces pressure to prove that cases involving its forces are investigated independently and that those responsible are held accountable.
