Hashim Thaçi from The Hague: Albania did what it could for me (tells

Former Kosovo President Hashim Thaçi has spoken about Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama's visit to The Hague, describing him as a figure with high moral values and a strong Albanian.

In an interview for Debat Plus on RTV Dukagjini, Thaçi appreciated the support and message conveyed by Rama.

"A man with high moral values, a strong Albanian and a true statesman. I am also a citizen of Albania. The Albanian state did everything it could do," Thaçi emphasized.

He meanwhile recalled the days of the war in Kosovo and the efforts to preserve the opportunity achieved in Rambouillet.

Thaçi emphasizes the importance of allies and the political moment for realizing the rights of the people of Kosovo, while also recounting the difficult journey from Albania to Kosovo in March 1999.

The former president also said that during that time he had insisted that the KLA not be extinguished.

"I knew from history that no people in the world has ever achieved all their rights alone, without allies, and all at once. Nor could the people of Kosovo and its leaders be an exception to these written and mostly self-evident rules."

I knew from history that no people in the world has ever achieved all their rights alone, without allies, and all at once. Nor could the people of Kosovo and their leaders be an exception to these written and mostly self-evident rules.

During those days there were moments when I remembered the experiences of peoples and leaders around the world who had gone through similar situations. These processes are difficult and complicated. If you miss the moment, or if you offend the decision-makers, you lose the cause for a long time or even forever, no matter how right or how many people may have been sacrificed.

In order not to miss the opportunity we had gained in Rambouillet, at the beginning of March 1999, to enter Kosovo from Albania, I walked for about 40 hours in mountainous terrain, many of which were mined.

"To avoid being investigated by Serbian forces, we did not move during the day, we took refuge in the mountains. Every attempt to cross the border was a step closer to death. But it had to be done. Because human dignity and the freedom of the homeland were life itself," Thaçi emphasized.

He also stated that Serbia had understood that the agreement was leading Kosovo towards independence and therefore had rejected it.

Speaking about the decision to accept the agreement, Thaçi described it as one of the most difficult and at the same time proudest decisions of his life.

"The decision to accept the Rambouillet agreement was one of the hardest, but also the proudest, of my life. Almost impossible, but necessary. I was not sure if I was signing the freedom of Kosovo or the end of myself, or both," he declared.

We recall that the Rambouillet Conference in France in 1999, attended by delegations from Kosovo and Yugoslavia, paved the way for the liberation of Kosovo.
