A 51-year-old Albanian employed in the construction sector in Malta died after the ceiling of a house under repair in the Sliema area trapped him after it collapsed.

The Construction Authority in Malta has confirmed the news to the local media, while it is reported that a second 31-year-old worker from Albania is in the hospital.

He managed to get out of the building on his own after the collapse and is currently being treated for his injuries at Mater Dei Hospital, but his condition is not yet known.

The two men were doing renovation work on a house in St. Ignatius when neighbors heard a loud noise shortly before 10:00 a.m. A woman who lives near the scene told reporters she rushed outside to see a large plume of dust and a man coming out of the building looking for an ambulance after his colleague was trapped inside.

Shortly thereafter, employees of the Department of Civil Defense intervened to pull the construction worker from the rubble.

The prosecution has launched an investigation into the incident, while officials from the Occupational Health and Safety Authority have discovered that there is no permit from the urban planning office for the works that were being carried out inside the building.
