A prosecutor's office for crimes in the field of technology in Serbia has begun investigations related to online threats directed at the American ambassador in Belgrade, Christopher Hill.
The threats followed an April 15 visit by the US ambassador to the Faculty of Philosophy in Novi Sad, where he met with that faculty's professor and journalist Dinko Gruhonjic, whom right-wing groups in Serbia accuse of "spreading hatred" in his public appearances. , in which he criticizes the growth of nationalization in Serbia.
After that, threats were addressed to Ambassador Hill and Professor Gruhonjic, mainly through the Telegram network. such as "Bullet for both", "I would kill this Hilli without an ounce of remorse", "Kill Hilli", etc., while a photo of the American ambassador under the aim of a sniper rifle was also published.
Neither Ambassador Hill, nor the US embassy in Belgrade, nor the State Department, have made any comments regarding the threats.
During the visit, Ambassador Hill also stayed in the multimedia television studio, which was built with the help of the American embassy, and talked with professors and students about the state of media freedom in Serbia and the threats against them in Novi Sad.
His visit to the Faculty of Philosophy took place two weeks after the four-day blockade of this faculty, organized by the right-wing groups: "Eco Chetniks", the Royal Serbian Youth of Novi Sad and the Association of Students of the Republika Srpska.
A former Serbian diplomat, Zoran Milivojevic, told the VOA Serbian-language program that, given that these are serious threats, he expects the responsible authorities to "identify the threats, prevent the possible negative consequences associated with these threats and take appropriate measures to guarantee the full safety of the ambassador".
Mr. Hill was appointed to the post of American ambassador to Serbia in the fall of 2021. A career diplomat, he was the first diplomatic representative of the United States to Albania, after 45 years of isolation. In October 2016, the former Albanian president, Bujar Nishani, honored Mr. Hill with the title "Gjergj Kastrioti - Skënderbeu", on the 25th anniversary of the restoration of diplomatic relations between the United States and Albania.
In the 1990s he was a member of the negotiating team that drafted the Dayton Agreement in 1995, which ended the war in Bosnia.
