Russian President Vladimir Putin said Wednesday that his country must gain the trust of the United States before a solution can be found to his country's three-year war in Ukraine.

Putin told reporters in St. Petersburg that he was pleased with the outcome of high-level talks between US and Russian officials that were held in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday.

He added that they were a "first step" towards improving tense relations between Moscow and Washington.

But he added that "it is impossible to resolve many issues, including the Ukrainian crisis, without increasing the level of trust between Russia and the United States."

During a televised speech, President Putin said he would like to hold a "high-level meeting" with US President Donald Trump, but for it to produce results, he said, preliminary preparations were needed.

The talks in Riyadh, led by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, were the first major talks between the two superpowers in more than three years since Russia's invasion of Ukraine and Western efforts led by Washington to arm Kiev to repel the attack.

"I have been briefed on the talks. I highly appreciate them and there are results," Putin said, according to the Interfax news agency, at a drone factory in St. Petersburg. "In my opinion, we took the first step towards restoring cooperation in various areas of common interest."

Neither Ukrainian nor European officials were at the table at the Riyadh talks, but the United States said they would be included in future negotiations to end Europe's deadliest conflict since World War II.

Moscow began its aggression against Ukraine almost four years ago. Russia now controls about a fifth of Ukraine's internationally recognized territory.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly said that his country will not accept an imposed solution to the conflict.

While former US President Joe Biden provided tens of billions of dollars in armaments to Kiev, current President Donald Trump is pushing for a quick end to the war started by Moscow.

He said Tuesday that Ukraine "should never have started" the war. In a new comment Wednesday on his "Social Truth" platform, Trump called President Zelensky an "unelected dictator."

Trump also said that the only thing Mr. Zelensky had been good at was manipulating his predecessor Joe Biden.

"I love Ukraine, but Zelensky has done a terrible job, his country has been destroyed and millions of people have died needlessly," Mr Trump said.

Speaking ahead of talks with US envoy for Ukraine and Russia Keith Kellogg in Kiev, Zelensky said that "President Trump ... unfortunately lives in this space of disinformation" caused by Russia.

Zelensky told reporters before meeting with Mr. Kellogg that although US officials have said there will be no deployment of American troops as part of any possible post-war peacekeeping mission, they could help in other ways, such as with air defense systems.

Mr. Kellogg's visit to Ukraine comes amid a wave of international diplomacy. On Wednesday, French President Emmanuel Macron is holding a second round of talks with European leaders, who have also expressed concern that they have been left out of the table.
