US officially declares drug cartels as terrorist organizations
Mexican cartels

The US State Department designated eight cartels operating in Latin America as terrorist organizations, following an executive order that President Donald Trump signed during his first day in office.

The organizations are accused of posing a significant threat to the nation's national security, foreign policy or economy, according to a notice to be posted in the Federal Register.

They include Tren de Aragua, Mara Salvatrucha, Cartel de Sinaloa, Cartel de Jaslisco Nueva Generacion, Carteles Unidos, Cartel del Noreste, Cartel del Golfo and La Nueva Familia Michoacana.

The cartels were designated under the authority of an executive order signed by President George W. Bush following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

This order provides for the freezing of assets linked to cartels in the US and prohibits American citizens from doing business with these entities.
