Journalist executed in Peru while investigating police corruption

A journalist, a candidate in October's regional elections, was killed on Saturday during her visit to a market in the city of Caras, Peru.

44-year-old Susi Aponte, a candidate in the Ancas district in the October 4 elections – ran the online media outlet “China Polo Dominical”, where she published reports on irregularities and allegations of corruption within the police.

She was shot dead while walking. Five other people were injured in the attack. Police announced the arrest of a suspect, a Venezuelan national.

A few days ago, Susi Aponte announced via social media that she was receiving threats from inside prison.

The Peruvian Press Council, which represents journalists in the country, called for an investigation, noting that similar cases usually remain unsolved.

According to local police figures, four Peruvian journalists were killed last year.
