Washington has warned Iran that there will be "severe consequences" in the event of an attack against Israel.
The statement by US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin comes amid rising tensions despite President Joe Biden's call for a ceasefire in southern Lebanon.
Austin also stressed that the United States will protect American partners and allies in the face of threats from Iran and will do everything to prevent any possible 'actor' from exploiting tensions or expanding the conflict.
