WASHINGTON – The United States will send "several thousand" additional troops to the Middle East to increase security and prepare to defend Israel if necessary, the Pentagon announced Monday.
The additional force will consist of members of several combat aircraft units, Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh said.
This decision comes after the recent attacks in Lebanon and the assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, a significant escalation of the war in the Middle East, this time between Israel and Hezbollah.
The additional troops will include members from F-15E Strike Eagle, F-16, A-10 and F-22 fighter jet units and escort teams to support them. The fighter jets were expected to replace units already stationed in the Middle East. But now those that are there and the new units will stand together to double the air combat power in this region.
On Sunday, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin also announced that he will temporarily extend the stay of the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier and accompanying units in the region.
The planes are not there to help with potential evacuations, spokeswoman Singh said, but "are there to protect American forces."
