The Google Play Store is used by fraudsters to distribute "malware," among the millions of apps that are downloaded daily by users worldwide.
According to security researchers Kaspersky SecureList, the infamous Necro malware has also been found on the Android operating system. It is estimated that more than 11 million devices have been infected, a number of downloads estimated by researchers who searched for infected apps.
Some apps, such as Camera and Max Browser, have been confirmed infected. The malware even carries modes for WhatsApp from unofficial sources, as well as a mod for Spotify that, like the platform's premium service, is called Spotify Plus. Researchers even report a number of infected devices for games like Minecraft and Melon Sandbox.
The malware was part of Wuta Camera from version 6.4.2.148 until its detection and removal in version 6.4.7.138, as noted in kaspersky's SecureList report. Max Browser was removed from the Play Store, but downloaded and installed more than a million times and contained Necro from version 1.2.0 onwards.
This virus opens and clicks on ads to generate revenue, however this is done through invisible windows. Google said all known infected apps have already been removed and that most users are protected by Google Play Protect, the default antivirus on most Android devices.
