Pope Leo XIV: The war in the Middle East, a scandal for humanity
Pope Leo XIV

The deaths and suffering caused by the war in the Middle East are "a scandal for the entire human family," Pope Leo XIV said today, as he repeated his call for an immediate ceasefire.

The Pope, who is American, said he continues to follow the situation in the Middle East and other regions ravaged by violence with "astonishment."

"We cannot remain silent in the face of the suffering of so many people, the helpless victims of these conflicts. What hurts them hurts all of humanity," Leo said in his weekly Angelus prayer in St. Peter's Square.

"I strongly reiterate my call to persevere in prayer, so that hostilities cease and the path to peace finally opens," he added.
