Pope: NATO's barking at Russia's gates may have pushed Putin into

Pope Francis said NATO's "barking" at Russia's gates may have led to Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine and said he has offered to meet the Russian President in Moscow.

In an interview with Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, Francescu reflected on Russia's deadly aggression towards its neighbour and said that although it might not go far enough to say that NATO's presence in nearby countries "provoked" Moscow, it "probably gave it a good argument".

Francis also condemned the "brutality" of the war and compared it to Rwanda's civil war in the 1990s, which resulted in a genocide of the Tutsi minority.

The Vatican has been demanding since mid-March a meeting between Francis and Putin in Moscow, the Pope said. "Of course we needed the Kremlin leader to give us time. We haven't received any answers yet and we're still trying, even though I'm afraid Putin can't and doesn't want to have this meeting at the moment."

In the interview, Francis ruled out the possibility of going to Kiev at the moment: "First I have to go to Moscow, first I have to meet Putin".

Francis said he had cancelled a meeting with Patriarch Kirill, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church and a key Putin supporter who has defended the war, as both thought it was not the appropriate time to hold the meeting, but in a phone call said he warned Kirill not to "turn himself into the devil of Putin's altar".

Since the invasion of Ukraine, Francis has repeatedly criticized the invasion, avoiding naming Putin explicitly, in line with Vatican foreign policy to keep the door open for possible dialogue.
