The UN World Food Program says people around the world will starve to death if Ukraine's ports on the Black Sea do not reopen soon.

"We have to open these ports so that food can move in and out of Ukraine. "The world wants this because hundreds of millions of people around the world depend on these supplies," said WFP chief executive David Beasley.

WFP is concerned that if the silos are not emptied soon, there will be nowhere to store this summer’s crop, causing massive waste and further raising global food prices.

Earlier in the day, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations said 25 million tonnes of grain were currently stranded in Ukraine and its ports on the Black Sea were closed.

Since February, the country, one of the world’s leading producers of corn and wheat, has been restricted to exporting wheat by train.
