US President Joe Biden has appointed a new White House spokeswoman, Karine Jean-Pierre, the first dark-skinned lesbian in the post, highlighting her experience, talent and honesty to date.

Karine Jean-Pierre was Jen Psaki's deputy spokeswoman and will take office on May 13, the White House said.

"She will be the first woman of color, an open LGBTQ + person in this position," Psaki wrote on Twitter, announcing at the outset that she would step down during her term.

"It will give its voice to many people and enable many people to have big dreams," she added.

Karine Jean-Pierre, 44, was born in Martinique. Her parents, originally from Haiti, immigrated to the United States. She grew up in New York City, where her father worked as a taxi driver and her mother took care of the house. He lives with a CNN reporter and they have a daughter.

Jean-Pierre graduated from the prestigious Columbia University and later entered politics, often emphasizing that her family's life path, an example of the "American Dream", determined her career. She worked on both Barack Obama's campaigns and later on Joe Biden's campaign.

"I represent everything Donald Trump hates," she said in a 2018 video for MoveOn, in which she was one of the leading figures for some time.
