After a phone call with Vladimir Putin, Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said the Russian president had apologized for the comments made by Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov.

Sergey Lavrov said over the weekend that Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler had "Jewish blood". He made this comment in an attempt to compare Hitler with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, who is of Jewish descent.

"Zelensky uses this argument: what kind of Nazism can they have as a state when the leader is Jewish. I may be wrong, but Hitler also had Jewish blood. That means absolutely nothing. "The wise Jewish people say that the most ardent anti-Semites are usually the Jews."

The statement angered Israel, saying it was an "unforgivable" lie.

An apology from Putin is surprising, given that just two days ago the Russian Foreign Ministry was continuing to defend the comments and accuse Israel of supporting the "neo-Nazis" in Ukraine.

Naftali Bennett's press office said the Israeli prime minister accepted Putin's apology and thanked him for clarifying the issue. Russia itself reports that Putin and Bennett discussed the Holocaust, but did not comment on Putin's apology.
