Sinn Fein, anti-crown nationalist party wins Northern Ireland election

Sinn Fein, the Irish nationalist party won the majority of seats in Northern Ireland's parliament, for the first time in history.

The party's victory, which decades ago was the political wing of Ireland's liberation army (IRA) was predicted by the polls.

Michelle O'Neill, the leader of Sinn Fein in Northern Ireland, called it a "historic day" and said the party would "work harder for everyone."

Since the founding of Northern Ireland, the Protestant-majority state has been led by pro-British trade unionist politicians.

If the results are confirmed, Sinn Fein, the former political wing of the IRA, would take up the post of first minister in Belfast.

The party has campaigned on economic issues, posing as a progressive force, but Sinn Fein also wants Northern Ireland to join the rest of the island, the Republic of Ireland.

Among the points of the party's programme is one that calls for the union of the Irish island as "the best plan, the greatest opportunity for all those living on the island".

But, unlike weapons, Sinn Fein is already using diplomacy. In its programme are also the holding of two referendums for secession from the British crown and union with Ireland within the next five years.

For decades Northern Ireland was troubled by protests and conflicts between Catholic Irish and Protestant English. The former sought union with the rest of Ireland, while protestants stood under the crown.
