Pope Francis has bilateral pneumonia, the Vatican Press Office announced.
"Laboratory tests, chest X-rays and the clinical conditions of the Holy Father continue to present a complex picture," a statement said.
"The control CT scan of the chest that the Holy Father underwent this afternoon, prescribed by the Vatican health team and the medical team of the Fondazione Policlinico Gemelli, showed the onset of bilateral pneumonia that required further pharmacological therapy," the statement continues. "The polymicrobial infection, which appeared in the context of antibiotic therapy of bronchitis and therapeutic treatment is more complex."
The announcement also states that "Pope Francis is in good spirits." This morning he "received the Eucharist and throughout the day alternated rest with prayer and reading of texts. He thanks you for the closeness you feel at this moment and asks you with a grateful heart to continue praying for him," the note concludes.
