Pope Francis opens the "Holy Door"

In the traditional Christmas prayer, Pope Francis appealed for peace, devotion and commitment.

On this holiday, he also opened the Holy Door in the Vatican, symbolizing that the year 2025 will be a "holy year."

The Jubilee, a historic event that takes place every 25 years, will end with the closing of the Holy Door on January 6, 2025, on the "Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord."

The origin of the custom goes back to Pope Martin V, who, for the Extraordinary Jubilee in 1423, opened a holy door to enter the Lateran Basilica in Rome.

In St. Peter's Basilica, this tradition first began for the jubilee of 1450.

According to biblical tradition, the Jubilee Year is a special year of forgiveness of sins, debts, and universal pardon.

The Pope also participated in the festive prayers in person, despite having a cold and being in poor health. The prayer was at the sign of the "Holy Door", which marks the opening of a "holy year", which is filled with great hopes for peace in the world and for a better life for all.

"This is the night when we hope the gates of hope, blessing, and mercy will open. This is the night when God says to each one: There is hope for you too!"

Hope and forgiveness, reconciliation and a new relationship with God - these are the symbols of the "holy year". But hope for the Pope means even more: "Christian hope is not a happy ending to a beginning, it is God's promise that we will find support in this world that suffers and groans. Therefore it calls us to hurry, not to continue the usual routine, not to remain in mediocrity and laziness but to have the courage to change things."

The year of hope

"The Holy Year is a time of hope," the Pope said. We must become, he said, pilgrims in search of truth, dreamers who never tire, men and women who live with hope and work for the establishment of peace and justice. The Pope said that "we must commit ourselves to transforming the world, which is distorted by the logic of profit..."

The prayers in the Vatican and Rome took place under tight security. Several thousand people gathered for the mass with the Pope in St. Peter's Basilica, while around 25,000 people gathered outside in St. Peter's Square. The highlight was the Pope's blessing in his traditional multilingual Urbi et Orbi message.
