Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi left Tehran for New York on Sunday evening to attend the United Nations General Assembly session.
Before arriving in the US, he is expected to stop briefly in Doha, the capital of Qatar, according to the Iranian Tasnim news agency.
This trip comes at a tense moment in relations between Iran and the United States.
US President Donald Trump has intensified his rhetoric against Tehran, warning that "something big could happen very soon with Iran".
In an interview with Fox News, he said he is in a "decision-making position" and that options include continuing economic pressure, reaching a deal, or facing severe consequences if Iran does not accept the terms.
However, Trump added that he would be open to meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian during the UN proceedings in New York.
On the Iranian side, Pezeshkian has left open the possibility of negotiations, but has conditioned the resumption of dialogue on the US returning to the commitments of the June interim agreement.
He stressed that "war is not in anyone's interest" and that Tehran remains ready for a negotiated solution if Washington respects its obligations.
Meanwhile, Iranian forces have warned of the possibility of resuming the war and launching attacks on Iranian territory. The Joint Chiefs of Staff said it had received information about US preparations for combat operations. Iran's conditions for returning to negotiations include the release of frozen assets, the lifting of the naval blockade, and an end to the war on all fronts.
Doha is playing the role of mediator, conveying Tehran's messages to Washington. Despite the tensions, the US has allowed the Iranian delegation to enter its territory to participate in UN meetings, a step seen as a signal of the possibility of resuming dialogue.
