The Loch Ness Monster

This weekend will see the biggest Loch Ness monster expedition in 50 years using the latest equipment in search of Scotland's legendary beast.

It's been 90 years since two photos of the monster went around the world and newspapers recounted a 1,400-year-old legend. There is still no conclusive evidence that the monster exists, despite decades of research. Maybe until now.

Loch Ness Exploration and the Loch Ness Center hope that will change this weekend as they explore the waters that stretch 23 miles from Fort Augustus to Loch End.

"Observation equipment never before used in Loch Ness will serve to reveal the secret of the mysterious waters," the center said in a statement. “Thermal drones that generate thermal images of water from the air using infrared cameras can be key to identifying any mysterious anomalies.

"A hydrophone will be used to detect acoustic signals underwater to listen for sounds that may be coming from the monster, as well as other fact-finding technology."

A group of volunteers will be watching the water for strange movements. Some will be able to do this from their home through cameras that are placed on the lake and report immediately.

The "mission" is the largest of its kind since 1972 when the Loch Ness Bureau of Investigation carried out a massive survey.
