Dispute over Ukraine's EU membership: Austria opposes

Ukraine says it is disappointed that its efforts to join the European Union have met with resistance from Austria.

Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg was quoted as saying that Kiev should not be offered membership in the 27-nation bloc and should be considered alternative routes to developing EU-Ukraine ties. Ukraine has called the comments "strategically short-sighted."

The EU sided with Ukraine during the war, punishing Russia with sanctions.
