Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani has canceled a planned visit to the United States on June 21-22, in a development that has further strained diplomatic relations between Rome and Washington.
The decision comes after US President Donald Trump's statements regarding Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, which have been described by the Italian side as "offensive" and "serious".
Meloni: Trump "invented" the story about the photo at the G7
At the center of the reactions has been Meloni herself, who has categorically denied Trump's claims about an episode during the G7 Summit.
According to Trump, Meloni "begged" for a photo during the summit and he only accepted out of regret.
The Italian Prime Minister has described these statements as untrue and completely fabricated, expressing surprise at their publication and emphasizing that they do not reflect the reality of the relationship between them.
"I am surprised by these allegations. They have no real basis," was the gist of her public reaction, where she accused the American president of distorting the facts.
"I am shocked by Trump's completely fabricated words. I regret that he does not show the same determination against the enemies of the West. And remember: Italy and I never beg," Meloni said forcefully.
What did Trump say?
Meloni's reaction came after Trump, in an interview with an Italian television channel, stated that she "begged" to take a photo with him during the summit, adding that he had only agreed out of regret.
According to media reports, Trump had said that Meloni "wanted a picture at all costs" and that he "wouldn't have done it, but did it out of regret."
Diplomatic consequences and Rome's reaction
Following the controversy, Tajani stated that Trump's statements not only affect the figure of the Prime Minister, but also the dignity of Italy as a state, considering it unacceptable to continue the visit under these conditions.
The cancellation of the trip to Washington is seen as a clear signal of escalating diplomatic tensions, although so far there has been no official reaction from the American side.
The event is expected to have an impact on the climate of transatlantic cooperation, especially in the areas of security and political coordination between the two countries.
