US Vice President warns Israeli officials who oppose Iran deal

United States Vice President JD Vance sent a strong message on Thursday to Israeli critics of the agreement signed between Washington and Tehran to end the conflict in the Middle East.

During a press conference at the White House, Vance urged members of the Israeli government to "wake up and face reality," emphasizing that President Donald Trump remains Israel's most important ally on the international stage.

"Donald J. Trump is the only state leader in the entire world who is currently close to the state of Israel," Vance declared.

He added that, if he were part of the Israeli cabinet, he would not attack the "only powerful ally" the country currently has.

The statements come at a time when relations between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Trump appear to have become strained following the agreement reached with Iran.

The agreement, signed on Wednesday, provides for a permanent end to hostilities and the launch of a 60-day period of negotiations to determine the future of Iran's nuclear program.

According to the document, Iran must dilute its stockpile of enriched uranium under international supervision and not develop nuclear weapons.

However, many other elements of the agreement remain to be negotiated.

Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich have been among the most vocal opponents of the deal.

Smotrich called it "bad for Israel and for the entire free world," while Ben-Gvir stated that the agreement does not bind Israel, emphasizing that the country remains "an independent and sovereign state."

Vance admitted that these statements bother him.

“Israel’s problem is not Donald J. Trump, and anyone in Israel who thinks the biggest problem is the president of the United States needs to wake up and understand the reality of the situation the country is in,” he said.

In an interview with The New York Times, Vance went even further by directly addressing Ben-Gvir and Smotrich.

"A country of nine million people cannot kill its way to solve every national security problem it has," he said.
