Brother of notorious drug lord "Fito" arrested in Colombia

Colombian authorities have arrested the brother of notorious Ecuadorian drug trafficker Adolfo "Fito" Macias, as part of a joint operation between Colombia and Ecuador.

The news was announced by Colombia's Interior Minister, John Reberg, who announced that Javier Macias, known by the nickname "Xavi", was arrested on Tuesday after being wanted by Ecuadorian justice for murder, money laundering and participation in a criminal organization.

According to authorities, “Xavi” was living in Colombia using a false identity and had an Interpol red notice against him. Minister Reberg did not provide further details on the location or circumstances of the operation.

The arrest comes a year after his brother, Adolfo “Fito” Macias, the leader of the Los Choneros criminal gang, was extradited to the United States. “Fito” had made a spectacular escape from prison in 2024, before being captured and handed over to American authorities in July 2025.

He is the first person extradited from Ecuador to the US after the referendum promoted by President Daniel Noboa, who has declared an open war against organized crime with the support of Washington.

"Fito" is currently facing trial in New York, where he is charged with seven felony counts, including drug and weapons trafficking. If convicted, he faces sentences ranging from 20 years in prison to life in prison.

The Los Choneros gang, led by him, has been designated by the United States as a terrorist organization and is suspected of having close ties to the Mexican Sinaloa drug cartel.
