The US administration has ordered a temporary halt to student visa interviews at all US embassies or consulates.

According to a cable dated May 27, 2025, signed by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, all US embassies and consular sections have been instructed not to schedule new interviews for F visas, which relate to academic students intending to study in the US, M visas, which relate to professional students, and J visas, which involve cultural exchanges.

The decision took effect immediately and is part of preparations for a new verification regime, which focuses on the content that applicants publish on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, X and TikTok.

So all young people who intend to study in the US will have all their social media posts checked.

The official document does not clearly specify the criteria for what can be considered inappropriate content, but mentions concerns about national security and combating anti-Semitism.

This lack of clarity has raised concerns within the State Department itself and among higher education institutions, which warn that such measures could have serious consequences for the enrollment process and the financial stability of American universities.

The American Association of International Educators (NAFSA) has condemned the decision, calling it unfair and harmful to a community that contributes significantly to the country's academic and economic development. Meanwhile, the American academic community expresses fear that international students are being treated as a threat, and universities as political terrain for the administration's ideological battles.

Further instructions are expected to be published in the coming days, while the student visa process remains suspended indefinitely.

This decision by the Trump administration also affects students from Albania and Kosovo who aim to study in the US.
