The French government has announced that starting July 1, 2025, smoking will be banned in all open public spaces where children may be present. The ban will apply to beaches, parks, public gardens, areas near schools, bus stops and sports facilities.

"Where there are children, smoking must disappear," said Health and Family Minister Catherine Vautrin in an interview with the Ouest-France newspaper. She added that failure to comply with the ban would be punishable by a fine of 135 euros.

According to the minister, the measure aims to protect children's right to clean air, emphasizing that "the freedom to smoke ends where this right begins."

The ban includes not only premises near primary schools, but also those near secondary and high schools, to prevent young people from smoking before entering educational institutions.

However, the decision will not apply to outdoor areas of cafes, nor to the use of electronic cigarettes. Minister Vautrin has expressed the intention to further restrict their use by lowering the nicotine content and reducing the number of permitted flavors.

This initiative is part of the National Program for the Fight against Smoking 2023–2027, presented by former Minister of Health Aurélien Rousseau, which aims to create a "tobacco-free generation" after 2032.

However, anti-tobacco organizations have expressed concern about the implementation of the measures, noting that they often remain only on paper.

According to official figures, smoking causes around 75,000 deaths a year in France. A poll by the Ligue contre le cancer association shows that 62% of French people are in favour of a wider ban on smoking in public spaces.
