The Foreign Minister of Kosovo, Donika Gërvalla, did not spare the labeling of the European Union, during her speech at the Dubrovnik Forum, where emissaries Gabriel Escobar and Miroslav Lajçak were also present.
Gërvalla was asked about the agreements with Serbia, tensions in the north of the country and Kosovo's international relations, when he compared the European Union to a paper tiger in terms of security.
"The main question for security in the Western Balkans is, and we ask ourselves: Can the European Union and does the EU have unity to guarantee and ensure peace in Europe? I appreciate that the EU cannot, and a German analyst said the same a few days ago, because it is not capable of providing security, the reasons are known. There is no political will, there is a lot of disunity in the bloc, and without the USA and NATO, the EU is a paper tiger when it comes to security", Minister Gërvalla declared.
Afterwards, the Deputy Prime Minister of Kosovo cited some figures that, according to her, show citizens' "skepticism" and "distrust" towards European diplomacy.
"In the last two years, distrust and skepticism in the capacity of EU diplomacy in our country has exploded to 30 points, until in 2021, about 50 percent told our Government not to compromise for the Association, while in 2023, this was 80 percent. In 2021, about 50 percent said not to compromise in the dialogue mediated by the EU, in 2023, this was 84 percent," she declared.
The response from high officials of the EU and the USA was also immediate. Escobar said that Kosovo cannot move forward with "populism and nationalism", while Lajçak responded to Gërvalla's criticism of the EU by saying that the union is a dream for many countries that are knocking on the doors of the EU.
