A former college football player fatally shot his mother after mistaking her for a stranger in their Missouri home. Jaylen Johnson, 25, opened fire on his mother Monica McNichols-Johnson, 56, when she tried to enter the home in suburban St. Louis of Olivette on Thursday evening.

McNichols-Johnson died at home even though Johnson's girlfriend tried to help him after he was shot. Johnson's attorney, William Goldstein, said his client immediately called 911 after shooting his mother and he hasn't stopped crying.

Prosecutors charged Johnson with manslaughter and armed criminal action, and bail was set at $100,000. Johnson, who has no criminal record, owns a rental car company in Missouri.

He has been charged with manslaughter and armed criminal action. Goldstein said Johnson carried a gun for protection after being robbed at gunpoint before. Missouri has a "stand your ground" law, which means people can legally use deadly force if they believe they are in danger.
