Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has fired the head of the State Guard Service, which is the person responsible for protecting the head of state. The decision comes just days after two of the agency's officers were arrested for being part of a plot prepared by Russia to assassinate Zelensky.
The dismissal of UDO chief Serhii Rud was revealed in a presidential decree, but no reason was given for his departure.
According to Ukrainian state media Ukrinform, Rud was appointed as Zelensky's top bodyguard in October 2019. The UDO is tasked with ensuring the security of Ukraine's president and senior state officials, as well as the protection of administrative buildings.
But earlier this week Ukrainian secret service and police handcuffed two security officials suspected of being involved in the next plot to execute Zelensky.
"Two colonels in the UDO were accused of carrying out subversive activities against Ukraine in exchange for financial compensation," the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine said on Tuesday.
Both colonels were charged with treason, while one was also charged with preparing a terrorist act.
The SBU announced that their intervention had caused plans to kill Zelensky and other senior Ukrainian officials, including the head of this service, Vasyl Maliuk, and the head of Ukraine's Intelligence, Kyrylo Budanov, to "fail".
The prosecutor's office said one of the suspects took two drones and ammunition from Russia's state security service (FSB), which they intended to transfer to another associate to carry out an explosion.
