Germany rules out recognition of Palestinian state: Conditions not met

The German Chancellor said she will not join an initiative by Western allies to recognize a Palestinian state at the UN General Assembly next month.

Speaking at a joint press conference with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Friedrich Merz said: "The federal government's position is clear regarding the possibility of recognizing the state of Palestine, and Canada knows this. We will not join this initiative. We do not see the necessary conditions being met."

Last month, Carney announced that Canada would become the third G7 country to officially recognize a Palestinian state. This followed similar statements by France and the United Kingdom, which said they would take the step if Israel did not meet certain conditions.

Currently, 147 of the 193 UN member states officially recognize the Palestinian state.
