According to preliminary information, the tragic accident with at least 38 dead in the Tempe area, caused by the collision of two trains, is thought to be the result of human error.

According to Greek media, despite the hundreds of millions spent over the past 30 years on Greek railways, the lack of modern signaling and remote control systems along the entire length of the Athens-Thessalonica railway axis continues to cause problems.

Although it is too early to shed light on all aspects of the fatal tragedy, the data shows that the two trains collided head-on.

Speaking to local media, OSCE President Kostas Genidounias said that if the light signaling had worked, the tragedy could have been avoided.

"What happened is what we have been calling for all the years since the electronic systems do not work and everything is done manually on the Athens-Thessalonica axis.

If the lights were working, drivers would see the red lights and stop."

Regarding the circumstances of the accident, Genidounias explained that there is a double line at the point, one train goes up, one goes down, but both were on the same line.

It is worth noting that there have also been problems in the electricity supply of the network since yesterday afternoon after a cable was cut in Paleofarsalos, causing delays in the route.

Regarding the number of passengers and the problems with the tickets, representatives of Hellenic Train claim that there is a list of passengers, but on the railway it is not mandatory to identify as in airplanes, so one name can correspond to 4 tickets, making it difficult to identify the victims.
