As the death toll continues to rise, new images emerging from Tempe illustrate the scale of the tragedy.

Greek media reports that work is underway to remove the first two train cars, while rescue teams are removing bodies from the scene.

The images are shocking:

"We sent 20 Red Cross volunteers from the departments of Larissa, Katerin and Elassona to the scene. In the first three wagons it was not possible to get too close, we arrived at 12:30 in the evening", said one of the personnel of the rescue forces.

"The situation was tragic, as there were many dead. We found in the fields 4 to 5 people who were not alive and in the wagons, mainly in the first three, there was no one alive," he said.

He said that among the dead there are very young children, among them students. " 80% of the people were under 30 years old ", he declared.
