Ukraine's possible NATO membership is the main topic at the summit being held in Vilnius, Lithuania (July 11 and 12).

The alliance said in 2008 that Ukraine could join at a future date, but recently rejected its request for "fast track" membership.

The sticking point comes in Article 5 of NATO's charter, which says that if one member is attacked, all others must come to its defense.

If Ukraine were to join now, NATO countries would technically have to declare war on Russia. Kiev has admitted that it cannot join during the conflict, but wants to join as soon as possible afterwards.

Meanwhile, this Tuesday, President Volodymyr Zelensky considered absurd the fact that there is still no time limit on Ukraine's membership in NATO.

"It is unprecedented and absurd when no time frame is set for either the invitation or the membership of Ukraine. It seems that there is no readiness either to invite Ukraine to NATO or to make it a member of the alliance," said Zelensky.
