Foreign media report that Princess Kate Middleton's absence from public appearances may have resulted from a surgical intervention she performed.

In particular, the media in Italy, referring to rumors from a British journalist who often reports on the Royal Palace, write that the Princess of Wales underwent an ileostomy last January.

But what is an ileostomy?

Such a surgical intervention is performed when illness or other health problems prevent the large intestine (colon) from properly expelling the remains of digestion.

In this situation, doctors perform the opening of a hole in the abdomen, from which the feces will have to exit through the small intestine (ileum) into an external bag. The discharge is usually on the left side of the abdomen.

The procedure is fairly common but remains delicate and complex which, to be performed, requires a series of tests and precautions, including bowel preparation through a specific diet, complete fasting at least the night before surgery, and taking of laxatives a few hours before, to empty it and make it as "clean" as possible.

An ileostomy can be temporary, so that it is only needed for a short period of time because part of the colon needs time to rest in order to heal after treatment or surgery, or it can be permanent, where a large part of the colon is removed so that the cut ends can no longer be joined.
