Escobar: We support Montenegro's contribution to NATO and the
Washington's envoy for the Western Balkans, Gabriel Escobar

The United States is satisfied with Montenegro's move towards the European Union, said Washington's envoy for the Western Balkans, Gabriel Escobar, after meeting with Montenegrin President Jakov Millatovic and Prime Minister Millojko Spajic.

"The USA supports the European path of Montenegro and this government has already taken great steps. Most of the leaders in Montenegro have shown great vision," Escobar said during the March 18 press conference.

Commenting on the decline in support for Montenegro's NATO membership and Russian influence, Escobar said that Montenegro is a good friend of the US, but it is also an ally within the alliance.

"Malignant Russian influence in the region is very serious. After the [Russian] invasion of Ukraine, it became clear how important NATO is. "Montenegro contributes as a good partner, therefore it can be expected to become a new member of the EU," he said.

The alliance's official annual report showed that 44 percent of the population would vote for Montenegro to leave NATO, which is 20 percent more than two years ago.

The Prime Minister of Montenegro, Millojko Spajic, said that the decline in support for the alliance is a thing of the past.

"We have seen the figures of this report, but these figures belong to the past".

Spajic's government was formed four months ago.

Spajić said that he is convinced that citizens' support for NATO will increase because, according to him, citizens will only see benefits from membership in the alliance, especially in the economic field.

"Investors see that if you are a member of NATO, you are more reliable and physical security is important. When you are a member of NATO you are offered security. This is a benefit of membership".

Clarifying his statement given during an interview with Radio Free Europe when he said "the most important thing now for Montenegro is to support everything the prime minister is doing", Escobar said he was referring to supporting what Spajic is working to bring his country closer to the EU.

"I do not individually support the prime minister in what he does in domestic politics, but in what he does to make Montenegro the newest member of the European common market," Escobar said.

Commenting on the possibility that the parties of the former pro-Russian coalition of the Democratic Front enter the Government, Escobar said that the US has never commented on the relations between the prime minister and other political partners.

But, he added that the international community has made it clear how the parties in Montenegro position themselves according to the values of the Euro-Atlantic community".

"In this period, three members [authorities in Montenegro] help in regional stability and one of them is not so constructive and makes statements about Kosovo and causes turbulence. There is also an impact that worries Bosnia and Herzegovina, which does not help the countries' efforts for the EU and NATO. The international community is observing the rhetoric of some parties," said Escobar.

In the past, Escobar has expressed concern over whether the Democratic Front, which already provides parliamentary support to Spajic's government, would enter the Montenegrin government.

In an interview that Escobar gave to REL on March 15, he was asked if the US would reconsider the relationship with Montenegro if the former Democratic Front coalition joins the Government, the US official said that it is too early to talk about this issue .

In Spajiqi's Government, in addition to ministers from his party, the Evropa Tani Movement, there are also members from the Democrats, the pro-Serbian Socialist People's Party and the Albanian party.

The parties of the former coalition of the Democratic Front in the Parliament have given support to the Government, as well as the People's Democratic Party. The two leaders of these parties have said that they will enter the Government at the end of the year and have requested that the reformation of the executive be done within months. It is expected that these two parties will receive four ministerial posts, the post of vice president, and four ambassadors: in Moscow, Belgrade, Beijing and Athens./ REL
