There is a popular revolt in Serbia, says Albanian MP in Belgrade, Shaip Kamberi. If Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić wins the battle with the citizens, he says, he will lead Serbia towards dictatorship.

The streets of Serbia's capital have been filled with protesters against Vučić and his government. More than 100,000 people took to the streets in a demonstration organized by students and farmers' unions. There is a dispute over responsibility for the collapse of the roof of the Novi Sad train station, where 15 people died.

For several weeks, protesters have been blocking faculties at the University of Belgrade. The nationwide revolt of citizens, according to Kamber, stems from Vučić's unwillingness to talk to disgruntled groups.

"We have such a popular revolt in Serbia, when we absolutely see that there is an absolute unwillingness of President Vučić to sit down and talk with the dissatisfied groups of students, whether with the opposition, or with the minorities that are the most marginalized groups. We will see how long it will last, what will be the level and dynamics of the protests these days in Serbia. The regime expects that the end-of-year holidays will bring a slight decrease in the protests, because people are busy with the protests, but on the other hand, those who are behind the scenes organizing the protests should know that if it is interrupted, the momentum stops, they will also stop there," Kamberi declared to KosovaPress.

In an attempt to prevent the protests, the Serbian government has extended the winter school holidays by starting them almost a week earlier. The only Albanian MP in the Serbian Parliament declares to KosovaPress that Vučić will prevent any attempt to endanger his regime. “If Vučić wins this battle with the revolted citizens, I think he will lead Serbia from an autocracy to a dictatorship, where he will establish iron laws and rules in order to prevent any other attempt to endanger his regime in this way. What is important for next year is to see what the European Union’s reaction will be to the protests and to Vučić’s regime as a whole, what position they will take and what position the new administration of the United States of America will take regarding a country that claims to be part of the European Union, that receives finances from the EU but that has its mind on the empires of the East, whether Russia or China,” he concludes.

Vucic, who is accused of increasingly autocratic rule, maintains close ties with Russia and China. /KosovaPress/
