Many former Greek ships are sailing in the Russian legal fleet . The sale of obsolete ships is profitable for Greek shipowners. EU MEPs have called on the Greek government to act.
36 members of the European Parliament have addressed a letter directly to the Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, in which they urge him to do everything necessary to prevent any further sale of Greek ships to Russia.
"We trust you and your government," write the signatories of the letter, including German politician Agnes Strack-Zimmermann of the liberal FDP party. She represents the liberal Renew group in the European Parliament.
“The question is whether various firms are doing business with Russia without the knowledge of the Greek state,” Strack-Zimmermann said. “We have called on the Greek government to investigate this matter and, if necessary, intervene.”
Greece the largest supplier
The European parliamentarians cite a study by the American organization Brookings, according to which more than one in three ships of the Russian illegal fleet, on which the US has recently imposed sanctions, previously belonged to shipowners from Greece. Greek shipping companies are the largest suppliers of ships to the Russians.
Most of the ships must have been sold years ago. But the sales apparently continued even after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. According to the study, since then, Greek shipowners have earned about four billion dollars from such transactions.
The EU decree of December 2023 on sanctions against Russia over the war in Ukraine stipulates the obligation to report such transactions to the relevant authorities. The decree also states that it is prohibited to sell tankers to Russia either directly or indirectly./DW
