U.S. media giant CNN has published a lengthy analysis of tensions between Kosovo and Serbia, which highlights the idea that the West's approach to Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic is destabilizing the Balkans.
According to CNN's analysis, Vucic is the Russian Trojan horse in Europe.
CNN's analysis is highly critical of the West's policy towards Serbia and Kosovo.
Part of CNN's analysis:
When Russia invaded Ukraine, the United States and the European Union accelerated their orientation toward Serbia. The Western Capitals focused much of their efforts on one particular target.
Their policies had two goals. First, to get Serbia into the Western fold, away from Russia. Second, allow their respective administrations to fully focus on supporting Ukraine.
Traditionally one of Moscow's closest allies in Europe, Belgrade has long tried to breach the boundary between its historic ties with Russia and a possible future of closer European integration. Western diplomats have sought to withdraw Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic from the orbit of his Russian counterpart, President Vladimir Putin, pledging a faster path to EU membership, while simultaneously warning of isolation if "rank" is breached.
But analysts have estimated that neither side has reached its target so far.
Serbia has refused to participate in all rounds of EU sanctions against Putin. And Serbia has continued to pursue its interests in the region, fomenting conflicts abroad to divert attention from discontent at home, while being confident and aware that they will not be reprimanded by the West.
The effects of this are mostly felt in Kosovo, which achieved independence from Serbia in 2008, following the bloody Balkan wars of the 1990s. But Belgrade – and many ethnic Serbs in northern Kosovo – still refuse to recognize Kosovo's sovereignty, straining relations between its neighbors.
