Eating mushroom steak has been fatal for three people in Australia, while a fourth is fighting for their lives.
It was 48-year-old Erin Patterson who invited her former father-in-law, former mother-in-law and sister-in-law and sister-in-law and sister's husband to a lunch at her home.
She made steak with mushrooms and served them to them. A few moments later the four elderly people began to feel unwell and three of them lost their lives without arriving at the hospital. The husband of the former mother-in-law's sister is the only one who survived and is in serious condition.
Patterson, who has been released, commented on the event, saying she did not intend to kill them.
"I didn't want to kill them. How can I hurt the people I love? "I didn't know the mushrooms were poisonous," she said.
"Now I want to clear up my story because I have become extremely stressed and overwhelmed by the death of my loved ones," she said.
"I hope this statement can help in some way. I believe that if people understand the background more, they will not rush so quickly to judge," she said after allegations that the deaths could be deliberate.
Police said two children were present at the lunch but they did not show any symptoms.
