EU extinguishes largest fire ever recorded in Belgium

The European Union has mobilized three helicopters and two firefighting planes to help Belgium deal with a massive fire in the east of the country, according to Reuters.

Help was requested by Belgian authorities after the fire in the High Fens area, Belgium's largest nature reserve, continued to spread since yesterday.

By this afternoon, the flames had engulfed around 1,600 hectares, according to the Wallonia regional administration.

Local firefighters, farmers, and the Belgian army have been engaged in extinguishing the fire, while dry conditions and high temperatures are making the operation difficult.

The size of the fire made it the largest ever recorded in Belgium.

It has surpassed the record set in 2011, when a fire burned about 1,400 hectares, according to data from the European Forest Fire Information System.

Local authorities have warned residents of the village of Sourbrodt to prepare for a possible evacuation.

Meanwhile, a summer camp for children in the area has begun to be evacuated, Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken announced.

The planes and helicopters sent by the EU come from the Czech Republic, Sweden and the Netherlands.

The European mechanism allows member states' resources to be mobilized quickly when a country requests assistance to deal with major emergencies.

The fire has emerged at a time when Belgium and other European countries are facing the fifth heat wave of this summer.

High temperatures, lack of rainfall, and dry vegetation create particularly favorable conditions for the spread of fires.

Scientists point out that climate change caused by human activity is increasing the likelihood of hot, dry conditions, causing fires to spread faster and last longer.

The situation in Belgium is another indicator of the pressure that extreme temperatures are exerting on Europe during this summer season.
