EU rejects Trump on Hormuz: It is not a NATO issue

Donald Trump is appearing increasingly frustrated by what he considers a lack of response from America's European allies, who are rejecting one after another his request for help.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz declared that war with Iran "is not a NATO issue," while officials in France have made clear that Paris will not send naval forces to the Strait of Hormuz as part of a US-led effort to force the opening of the strait through which a fifth of the world's oil passes.

Speaking to BBC Newsnight, Finland's President, Alexander Stubb, also said he did not support "escalating the situation" by sending his country's military to support the US.

Trump expressed surprise that other countries were not “eager” to participate and stressed that countries like China and Japan, which depend heavily on the Strait of Hormuz for their oil supplies, should contribute. The US president’s demand that European allies help secure the passage of oil and gas tankers through the Strait of Hormuz was one of the main topics of discussion at a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels on Monday.

" The Europeans are not willing to send troops to secure the Strait of Hormuz, "because that would add them to the list of potential targets" for Iran, Charles Hecker, a fellow at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), told DW.

At the beginning of the meeting, senior EU diplomat Kaja Kallas said that it is in the bloc's interest for the Strait of Hormuz to remain open, "so we are also discussing what we can do in this regard from the European side ," and added that the EU is in contact with American colleagues at various levels.

However, at the end of the meeting she said there was "no desire" among member states to expand the EU's naval mission in the Strait of Hormuz, "for the time being".
