Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has rejected accusations linking him to the so-called "sniper safaris" during the siege of Sarajevo in the 1990s, calling the claims lies aimed at portraying him as a monster and cold-blooded killer.

Reacting to allegations about a 1993 video in which he is allegedly shown holding a sniper rifle near gunmen in a cemetery, Vučić told reporters at a UK-Western Balkans regional economic conference in Belgrade: "I have never held a sniper rifle in my life. I have not even had the weapon you are talking about, because it is a camera tripod. I have never killed anyone, I have never injured anyone, and I have never done anything like that."

Croatian investigative journalist Domagoj Margetic said on Tuesday that he had filed an official complaint with the Milan Prosecutor's Office, alleging that Vucic participated in or helped organize so-called "sniper tourism," where foreigners allegedly paid Bosnian Serb forces to shoot at civilians from elevated positions.

In the letter to prosecutors, the journalist cites a 1993 video and alleged wartime interviews, along with testimony from Bosnian officials, as evidence that Vučić was a war volunteer in Sarajevo in 1992 and 1993, and a member of the New Sarajevo Chetnik Unit within the Army of Republika Srpska.

He also claims that Vucic spent several months stationed on the front lines at Sarajevo's Jewish cemetery. The allegations come as prosecutors in Milan last week opened an investigation into Italian citizens who may have taken part in so-called "sniper safaris," looking into possible charges of aggravated murder.
