Zelensky: Ready to work on US plan
Volodymyr Zelensky

After talks with senior US military officials on Thursday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he is ready to work with Washington on his vision for ending the war with Russia.

According to the plan drawn up by the Trump administration and seen by international media, such as Reuters, Kiev would have to cede territories in the Donbas region that it still controls, halve the size of its army and pledge not to join NATO, conditions it has rejected in the past.

In a video message posted overnight, Zelensky said that US military officials had presented him with their proposal and the points of a plan to end the war.

“Since the pre-war days, we have held a very simple position: Ukraine needs peace. A real peace - a peace that will not be broken by a third invasion. A dignified peace on terms that respect our independence, our sovereignty and the dignity of the Ukrainian people. And it is precisely such terms that we must ensure. I laid out our main principles. And we agreed that our teams will work on these proposals to ensure that everything is honest. We will not make harsh statements. And we are prepared for clear and honest work, Ukraine, the United States and our friends and partners in Europe and around the world,” Zelensky said.

The White House rejected claims that Ukraine was not involved in drafting the plan, which reportedly resulted from meetings between US special envoy Steve Wittkoff and his Russian counterpart Kirillo Dimitrev. European Union foreign ministers, who met earlier in Brussels, suggested they would not accept demands for punitive concessions from Kiev.

The French minister stressed that peace must be fair, respect everyone's sovereignty and prevent further aggression in the future. The plan says that Ukraine should limit its army to 600,000 troops in exchange for strong security guarantees, but no NATO troops will enter Ukraine.

It includes major concessions to Russia such as the de facto recognition of Crimea, Luhansk and Donetsk as Russian territory by the US. This accelerated American diplomacy comes at a time when Kiev's troops are suffering defeats on the ground and the Zelensky government has been hit by a corruption scandal with the dismissal of 2 cabinet ministers.
