The Polish ambassador to Russia, Krzysztof Krajewski, was attacked in St. Petersburg.
Fortunately, he escaped unharmed, thanks to the immediate intervention of the Polish State Protection Service (SOP). The incident, the most serious such attack in recent years, was confirmed by the Polish Foreign Ministry.
According to Gazeta Wyborcza, Krzysztof Krajewski was in St. Petersburg to meet with the local Polish diaspora, due to the anniversary of Poland's Independence. During the visit, while going to church, the ambassador was surrounded by a group of "activists" shouting anti-Ukrainian slogans.
The group of activists began cursing the ambassador and tried to hit him, but security men reacted immediately and prevented him from being hurt.
According to a spokesman for the Polish Foreign Ministry, "it was the most serious attack of this kind in many years and only the intervention of the guards prevented the ambassador from being beaten."
The Polish government expressed its disapproval of the attack and the "aggressiveness" of the protest group.
In protest, the Polish Foreign Ministry summoned the Russian ambassador to Warsaw for explanations, while announcing the agreement to close the Russian Consulate General in Gdansk and the limited movement of Russian diplomats in Poland.
