Sword attack at a school in Sweden, several people injured

A man armed with a sword has injured several people at a school in Fagersta, central Sweden, authorities announced on Friday, DW writes.

"Police have arrived at the scene and one person has been detained," a police statement said.

Authorities did not specify how many people were injured during the attack.

"Police are continuing to work at the scene with various sources. Citizens are asked to respect the blockade points and follow police instructions," the police statement said.

Police were called to Brinellskola, a high school in Fagersta, at around 2 p.m. Public broadcaster SVT reported that ambulances, police cars and a police helicopter were outside the school.

The municipality announced that other schools in the area had been placed on lockdown.

Justice Minister Gunnar Strommer told Reuters news agency that the government was in close contact with police after the attack.

"We have been informed of a serious incident in Fagersta. The police are on the scene and are working intensively on the case," Strommer said.

Fagersta, with about 12,000 inhabitants, is located about 170 kilometers northwest of the capital, Stockholm.
