Four decades ago, US President Ronald Reagan delivered one of his most powerful speeches; the one where he declared war on drugs, corruption and crime.
Reagan's speech was held at a time when more than 20,000 people were killed each year in the streets of America from clashes between gangs and criminal groups. The financial damage of these clashes was over 9 billion dollars.
Today, 40 years later, Ilir Meta receives and remembers Reagan's speech, hoping to convince Albanian citizens that he is a 'mini-Reagan' of Albania. But why Ilir Meta can never be a Reagan for Albania?
Ronald Reagan gave the speech a few months after he took office at the head of the White House. It was just the beginning of two presidential terms that are considered among the most successful in US history.
Ilir Meta, on the other hand, takes the words of the former American President and puts them in his own mouth after 30 years in politics, where he has passed all levels of power and burned on more than one occasion the possibility of being a Reagan.
The target could be a Reagan at the beginning of this millennium, when he led the socialist government, which is considered one of the most corrupt governments even by the standards of the Albanian transition. At that time he did not, on the contrary, he was accused of theft from the most common, up to the theft of gold in Kërrabë.
In co-governance with Berisha from 2009 to 2013, he again did not declare war on corruption, but was accused of being his master in the denunciations of the late Dritan Prifti and then in the Cez-Dia affair.
He has been rumored to be related to crime throughout his career in politics, most recently when he led the Assembly in coalition with Edi Rama. The accusations at that time also convinced Sali Berisha (today Meta's ally) to ask him to resign from the position of Speaker of the Assembly.
In the Presidency, his powers were limited, but enough to leave a mark even in this institution by distributing decorations and medals without criteria, so much so that it was jokingly said that he was selling them... and the joke is half the truth.
In conclusion, what Meta did not do for a moment in power, Ilir Meta promises us now in the opposition. Can it be believed?!
