With a chart in hand, US President Donald Trump unveiled the much-talked-about tariffs on all countries on Wednesday, starting with the most important ones.
He indicated that China “charges” the United States a 67 percent tariff, so the United States will charge China a 34 percent tariff.
The chart also showed that the United States will impose a 20 percent tariff on the European Union, a 46 percent tariff on Vietnam, 32 percent on Taiwan, 24 percent on Japan, 26 percent on India, 25 percent on South Korea, and 36 percent on Thailand.
Trump also announced a "minimum basic tariff" of 10 percent on other countries to "help rebuild" the US economy.
He initially declared that today is "one of the most important days" in American history, as he is expected to sign an order imposing reciprocal tariffs on various countries.
"We have some very, very good news today," the White House chief of staff said. "A lot of good things are happening for our country."
He declared that he would soon sign a "historic executive order imposing reciprocal tariffs on countries around the world."
"Reciprocal. That means they do it to us and we do it to them. Very simple. It can't get any simpler than that," President Trump added.
"It's our declaration of economic independence," Trump said, announcing the new measures.
The president said the United States would use the money generated by the tariffs to "lower our taxes and pay down our national debt."
According to him, April 2 will forever be remembered as "the day American industry was reborn."
"For decades, our country has been plundered, raped by nations near and far, both allies and enemies," he continued.
Trump announces 25% tariff on all foreign auto manufacturers
Following his speech, US President Donald Trump stated that when it comes to trade, sometimes "friend (is) worse than foe."
He says that over 80 percent of cars made in South Korea are sold in South Korea, and over 90 percent of cars sold in Japan are made in Japan, and that cars made in the US represent only a small share in those countries.
"Ford sells very little" in other countries, Trump says, an imbalance that has "destroyed" American industries.
"That's why at midnight we will be imposing a 25 percent tariff on all foreign-made automobiles," Trump said. "Those days are over."
He continues to criticize the EU and Asian countries for imposing tariffs on US-made automobiles.
Trump also added that the measures other countries are using are also "non-monetary."
